“It’s a free country, ya’ know.”

August 31, 2006 · 1 Comment

“It’s a free country, ya’ know.”

This a taunt that we hear kids say.  And yes it is for the most part. Yeah, we have to pay taxes…local, state, federal. We need to obey basic laws of the street and society (but you do wish you could put some of those aside especially when you hear about recent situations like the Conn lawyer that killed his neighbor when he heard that he was molesting his 2 year old daughter). But after those, yes, it is a free country.

Don’t want to send your kids to the public schools? You can send them to private ones or home school. Don’t like a TV show for what ever reason? Don’t watch it! Turn the channel. Don’t agree with a newpaper’s politics? You don’t have to buy it. Don’t want to vote? Don’t have to but please don’t complain when your candidate or issue loses. Every vote and voice counts, despite what you think.

This blog? As mentioned in a local forum, you don’t have to read it. It is totally your choice.  No one is forcing your index finger to hit that left button on your mouse on the web address. But to those that do take the time to read it, I thank you. If you would like to include your own “essay” on this blog I do welcome “guest bloggers” and you can use whatever Nom de plume you want to identify yourself (my email is in the “about” page link on the left side of this page).

It’s a free country.

Better than an evening of CSI…

August 29, 2006 · 1 Comment

Ah, Tuesday night.  An “off” night for CSI. I don’t mind the repeats this time of year. I prefer the original one that takes place in LV, though. A dreary, wet night. But the kids are fed (a good comfort meal of meatloaf, mash potatoes and green beans) and the dishes are done. Hmm, maybe I should go to the Amended  Budget meeting. If last week’s discussion about the budget (see blog below this one) was any indication the meeting this week should be “fun”.

It started with Mr. Luongo, the HH School Superintendent trying to explain to Mr. Introna, who used the dais as a “grandstand” last week, why the Special Needs budget is difficult to get down. He told Mr. Introna that his door was always open and when the school budgets were being discussed to re-evaluate he was more than welcome to walk down the street to see him and discuss his concerns.

He also tried to explain to Mr. Introna that the school district has its hands tied by complex Federal and state regulations.  That the school district also tries to keep the cost of litigation down when it comes to these cases. Mr. Introna still did not seem to grasp this concept.  This is understandable as he works in an Abbott school district (Union City) and they derive 78% of their $180,000,000 (yes, that number is correct) budget from State Funding. And 5% from the Federal gov’t!

http://www.union-city-nj.org/budget-ppt/2005_2006_budget.htm

Yes, our precious tax money is going to fund the school district that supplies his paycheck where he supervises a high school sports program.  I am sure his program gets all kind of nice, new sports equipment whenever he needs it. That there is plenty of space and funds for the Union City Special Needs kids. That they don’t have to beg for funds. FYI? They are also getting multi muiti-million dollar school buildings and a sports complex. All paid by the state (sorry, by you and me). Yeah. And you wonder why he can’t understand budgets.

http://www.njscc.com/Archive/2005/07/07.11.05/nr_07.11.05.asp

Introna could not grasp that the “school budget” boat had sailed when it came to the current budget in front of the council.  He had the opportunity to comment and make suggestions when the Council and School board finance committees were going over the budget months ago but he couldn’t be bothered. I guess as long as he is getting his nice, fat Abbott school paycheck every week, it is unlikely that he cares if the employees of HH get theirs on time.

Saccamono again expressed her pseudo concern about seniors of the town and the average increased tax of $450/home. But again, as the Mayor asked, did she offer any suggestions during the municipal budget process to help adjust the numbers?

Noooooooooooo.

Just more patronizing grandstanding on the dias after the fact.

Looking forward, Mr. DiPisa stated that the council is looking at the possiblity of more consolidating of services with other towns nearby and Mr. Meli offered the information that some NJ laws will be changing that will allow more towns to look at things to help decrease employee medical costs.

Mr. Kronyak, the borough’s very qualified ”money” man added in regard to this years budget dramatic increases were seen in oil related items, like electricity and gasoline. He also mentioned the increased cost of carrying bond money as the cost of borrowing has gone from 1% to 5%.

So they vote…yes, DiPisa, Kistner and Meli.  No, Introna, Skiba and Saccomano. The Mayor was the tie breaker so that HH gets a budget to keep functioning.

Mayor Jones added at the end of the meeting that the obligation of the Councilpeople is to the citizens of the borough and that the budget should never be a political issue. That if they had truly wanted to try and save the taxpayers money it is not done by saying “NO” way after the fact, but by doing their homework and asking questions before.

I agree.

Support

August 24, 2006 · 3 Comments

I enjoyed reading Mr. Goilio’s Observer letter today. I agree with him  wholeheartedly that we need to support Ron Kistner (and Tom Meli) and the eye he has on our town’s future.

But let us not forget that one of the best ways we can support the people we want to remain in office is to contribute $$ to their re-election campaign.

The Dems running this fall, Dinnano and Altobelli?  Remember that they had no problem accepting that nice ”tainted” (see comments in “Good, Bad, Ugly) Introna cash into their campaign coffers.  Is that what we need? More Dems on the Council with their hands out?

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

August 23, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Went to the Council meeting last night, just because. It’s always good for the entertainment value and last night didn’t disappoint.

The Good…

The meeting started with two very heartwarming presentations…the honoring of the 9/10 All Star Little league team. They won their district (2nd year in a row). Nice bunch of kids and great coaches. The second touching presentation was to honor two senior women for their long time service to their community on the occasion of the Observance of Women’s Equality Day.

The Bad…

The second meeting of the month contains the reports from the Councilpeople on the various town things that they oversee: DiPisa – Health and Parks; Kistner – Police and Recreation; Meli – Finance and Fire (he also says a few words about the business issues in town); Skiba – Transportation and Social Services; Saccomano – Streets and Land Use.  All of these Councilpeople presented well researched material. And then there is Mr. Introna who is in charge of the Sanitation and Public Facilities.  His report? 45 seconds and 4 sentences about a collapsed sewer line that someone else wrote for him. Gosh, isn’t it wonderful that this Councilman devotes so much time to his report?  But this is typical for him.  I have been to many meetings where I have seen this time and time again from him. I went to one meeting where he said he couldn’t get in touch with anyone to ask what is going on. True indiferrence to what his responsibilites are to the residents of HH. He isn’t there for “us”. He is there for his political party. This is of course, in between all the yawning, fidgeting, rolling of his eyes which he does while on the dais.

Also extensively discussed during the meeting was the impact that the planned Juvenile Detention Center in Teterboro could have on all of the towns surrounding Teterboro that supply services, ie Hasbrouck Heights – fire and rescue, Little Ferry – police.  During this discussion Ms. Saccomano mentioned a no-bid contractor that received the work, Maser Consulting for preliminary environmental assessment of the property.

Hmm. I remember that company name.  It seems that Mr. Introna received a campaign contribution of $1,100 from them in October 2005, which he filed with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commision in January, 2006.

Take a look…maser.pdf

From The Bergen Record, “Maser Consulting principal, Richard Maser. has personally contributed $9,500 to the County Democratic Party since 2003″.  It appears that $1,100 of that is with Mr. Introna. “Follow the money”. Right, Carol?

…and the Ugly

Ahh…a vote on a resolution to Amend the 2006 Budget. The Dems and Saccamano voted “no”. The reason why? They were unhappy with the amount of the school tax part of the Budget. Huh??? The rest of the council was flabergasted. Did they not receive a line item report of the school budget when it was defeated and the Council had to work with  BOE to make adjustments? Why didn’t they voice their concerns and resolutions to the Finance Committee and BOE back then? They shrugged their shoulders. No, I take that back.  Mr. Introna asked about the $2,000,000 Special Ed line and asked why they couldn’t be squeezed into the schools to bring them back into the district? Why can’t they share classrooms by making more lunch periods. Huh? Truly clueless. Ms. Saccomano voted no because again, she was “talking to people in town” and so many have to sell their homes now because they could no longer afford the taxes. When asked by the Mayor for her solution to this budget impasse, she had nothing to add. But they had no problem blaming the BOE for the problems.

So dirty politics and inappropriate donations rear their ugly head in Hasbrouck Heights…

Addendum to “hoods”…

August 21, 2006 · 1 Comment

It’s a nice night and we take a walk to the Blvd. to get some ice cream from Clydes and there they are again…baggy shorts and shirts, tapping down their cigarettes packs, hanging out on the street, talking on their cells, their red “gang” hankercheifs hanging from their back pockets.

It was early evening and the streets were crowded, but as an FYI to those parents that don’t know the curfew in town for under 18 is 10 p.m. I thought it was 11:00 until recently when a cop in town told a bunch of us when we were chatting about teens on the street.

Little hoods on the Blvd.

August 16, 2006 · Leave a Comment

I am waiting at a light on the Blvd. yesterday and three kids walk past my car and I had to stare. Two tall teenage kids and a short one dressed in their contrived  “living in the ‘hood” outfits…long baggy shorts, 4XL t-shirts and one of them had a backward baseball cap that said “Jersey City”.

I laughed when I saw them at first.  These kids have probably never been out of Bergen County with the exception of the summer trips with the family to the shore. But on the other hand, it concerned me as these kids truly have no idea of the impact their “posing” can have to them or Hasbrouck Heights community.

I can easliy see a car of kids from other towns driving through ours and seeing these white suburban kids trying to be something that they are not and being challenged to prove their authenticity. It’s asking for trouble. Big time.

I hope parents take a look at what their kids are wearing and talk to them about the image they are projecting and the trouble they are courting. Yeah, the kids will say, “Good, that’s what we want!”. But it will be a different story when trouble comes to our town because of a “fashion statement” that kids don’t truly grasp.

My son goes to high school in an urban area.  We have taught him to be confident as he walks around that town and to wear clothes that do not bring attention to himself. I realize that kids want to be individuals and be fashionable, but with “gang” wear filtering into communities that are fighting to keep them out, parents have to step in and help stop this trend. It’s not “cute”. It’s not “a phase”. It needs to stop for all of our children’s safety.

…why haven’t  Dinano/Altobelli filed their 7/15/06 “Report of Contributions and Expenditures” ? Are they pulling out of the General Election?

I notice that on the “Introna Team” disclosure that he had disbursed a check to their campaign.  Where are the other campaign contributions?
